Calculator Module

Calculator Module

This page shows screen-shots of the graphic user interface for the Calculator Module. It shows the information a user will input when using the downloaded tool.

The graphic user interface of the feed calculation module allows the user to select between two commercially high-value aquaculture species: rainbow trout or Atlantic salmon.

After the user selects the fish species, the graphic user interface gives the user the option to use their own feed conversion ratio data.

The graphic user interface then allows the user to select and input a feed formulation (35 different ingredients).

The software then calculates the environmental impact conversion ratio and the economic conversion ratio of the user-defined diet using a database of information and the associated formulas. The environmental impact conversion ratio (EICR) uses the following formula:

$$ EICR = EI * FCR $$

Where EI is the environmental impact (global warming potential, water use, land use, marine eutrophication potential, freshwater eutrophication potential, and biotic resource use); and FCR is the feed conversion ratio.

The economic conversion ratio (ECR) uses the following formula:

$$ ECR = feed cost * FCR $$

The database information used by the calculator module includes environmental impact data (global warming potential, water use, land use, marine eutrophication potential, freshwater eutrophication potential, and biotic resource use), and market price data of the 35 ingredients used in the calculator module.

The software computes the FCR of the user-defined ingredients based on algorithms (conditional statements and regression analyses based on feed trial experiments).

The graphic user interface provides a data visualization of the EICR and the ECR of the user-defined diet and for comparison, a reference diet for the selected fish species, and allows the user to export the graph information. An example of the output of the calculator module when Rainbow trout was the selected species, and the user input diet consisted of a formulation including a combination of the marine microalgae Nannochloropsis and Schizochytrium (referred to as NS in Table S4 in Sarker et al. (2020) is shown below:
